And regarding the game progression discussion, I've always been a fan of BW's system: EXP gained drops significantly when defeating opponents lower than you, meaning opponents several levels lower than you won't be worth grinding, but also bringing a new team member up to speed takes hardly no time at all. Coupled with the usual restriction where your badges affect how high level your mons can be before they might start ignoring you, and maybe imposing a new rule that you can't even catch mons above the obedience level cap, would allow you to explore quite a lot without also allowing your power level to become excessively higher than the hardest opponent available at any given time.
