Your opinion is valid, but even if this gen has more geometric designs it's silly to base your opinion of an individual design on a greater trend. I personally don't care about trends and only care if geometric/detailed-ness suits the individual design. I think an exaggerated head is effective for Chewtle because of its baby motif (babies have big heads) and because of its emphasis on chewing, which is emphasized by its big head. You can talk about how much more you like opee's design/art but it's not as imposing and the chewing motif is watered down.
Pic related is an example of a design where being too geometric/cartoony is bad, in my opinion. I don't care that Fennekin has a big head, I just think the cartooniness goes against the motifs and makes the design worse, rather than better.
