For me though, Ash and May's dynamic reminded me of other anime that tried doing something similar, with said dynamic winning out over the competition. For example, Shakugan no Shana.
But anyways, as for Dawn, her dynamic with Ash's diverged into its own thing after a certain point. Dawn wanted to be a coordinator from the start, and as a result, they didn't really bond through the whole student/teacher dynamic.
