I remember at the end of DP Dawn was going to go back to Kanto with Ash and they were incredibly close for boy-girls characters(for Pokemon, as far as that would let them).
They seemed like a couple in all ways but by name. Of course, since the series restarts every gen they could not let that happen, so they gave a bad reason for her leaving and did a hard reset this time. I really think they wanted to end it at DP.
Then finally after many years, Dawn won the Ashbowl in JN.
