The problem if you ask me isn't that they're nostalgia pandering, the problem is that GameFreak absolutely does not give enough fucks to put in the time, effort or funding into pleasing both sides and will take whichever one prints them more money more easily.
That's why everyone who didn't drop the franchise come the end of Pokemania is so uppity that so many features they've grown up with are gone, because there's legitimate concern that they'll be permanently wiped out in some misguided attempt at holding onto the nostalgia audience.
