Ignoring any and all evidence against you to try and enforce the narrative that you set up. But no, I do play the games, on cart and showdown, and yes, Mega Pidgeot was good in singles. It's a very strong boost to a pokemon that gives it the ability to make use of it's fantastic special movepool. Even if you'd like to discount it's top tier performance in Gen 7 UU, it was still extremely strong in OU and quite good in Gen 6 as well. And in both generations, especially Gen 6, it was extremely good in the official pokemon singles format as well. Even when Gen 7 added new things for it to face, Mega Pidgeot was still quite powerful. I would know, because I've actually used one. Did it have flaws? Yes. But all pokemon do.
Mega Pidgeot is a good example of how to make a Mega properly, and if I'm being honest, if they just gave Pidgeot No Guard as an ability and swapped the special and physical attack stats it has, it'd probably see a lot of use still. It wouldn't be as good as when it had the Mega, but it'd still be very powerful and have that unique role again. Gale Wings worked for Talonflame because it was literally built around that ability. Giving it to Pidgeot and magically expecting it to recreate that success is like giving Sheer Force to Shuckle and assuming it'll work out. Neither have the tools or moves to make the ability work, not then and not now.
Pidgeot could possibly be viable without the Mega, it's just need something unique. And I think No Guard would do it justice.
I mean, Swellow has a below average special attack stat and look how fucking much Specs Boomburst can do in it's hands. I think Pidgeot would be alright.
