Just imagine it, lads. Horizon Zero Dawn/Breath of the Wild map exploration with Pokemon freely roaming the wild to be engaged seamlessly into battle... in actual wilderness terrain, not patches of grass.
Battle system updated. Maybe a pseudo real time where Pokemon make "standard attacks" until you choose/they choose a move, with cool down so you can't spam. The Pokemon actually MOVE around/get knocked around while they fight. You still have full control over your character and can actually try to "run" from a battle, your Pokemon just follows you if you can get away successfully.
There are side quests, events, actives, and characters you can actually get attached to, aside from main story. Events, maybe sometimes leading up to legendary Pokemon, are added every so often.
Online mode adds the playerbase (in a server) to the map that you can interact with, standard battle hub location you can insta-fly/warp too for matchmaking, and of course there's a trading center.
Did I mention your Pokemon follow you naturally?
It's the game we could and should have by now, but we never will.
It hurts, lads.
