My own taste. I felt Gen 4 was the weakest overall. Was a massive letdown after Hoenn(outside of the starters). While the crazy amount of cross gen-evos was beneficial for competitive, the majority of the dex felt lackluster in terms of aesthetics and the legendaries were the worst of the franchise. Gen 5 had lots of lackluster designs sure, but the amount of decent to innovative designs was higher number than the last gen for me.
Even the "tryhard" designs like Zoroark(trickster fox with a youkai-esque design) and Zekrom(electric dragon with a mechanical design. Seems logical) seem less clusterfuckish comparied to Lucario(streetfighter dog with bandit mask? Random spikes? No canine muzzle? Little homages to Anubis? What?) and Palkia(water space dragon with mechanical design? Is this digimon?)
