The name I choose is typically reflective of the region or of the person who named them (a Pikachu named Sparky, for instance) though there are some instances of Pokemon choosing their names themselves (see: Melia.) Names are also sometimes used because I have a theme in mind, or am making a reference. Much like how I pick names for humans.
