You guys are missing out if you're only playing higher tiers. The best part about Smogon is the lower tiers where you can use Pokemon you've never tried or mess around with things that are blicked by specific Pokemon in higher tiers. If you don't like Smogon's bans they also litterally support VGC on Showdown as well as Anything Goes and other completely fabricated battle modes so you can really play whatever you want depending on what you like to use.
