A chap over WFG needed a cyndaquil so I bred one for him in HG, transfered to 5th gen and traded. He gave me a totodile and became a total bro.

water is usually the best starter, because when i play through new games I just use my starter and it's usually easiest to blow through with water and get overleveled early. depends on the gyms/final evo typing though. fucking empoleon wrecked shit because having a water/steel type after the 3rd gym kicks ass
