For certain items, instead of checking pokedex completion you would battle them, with them having the 3rd starter and two of Vileplume/Ninetales/Cloyster. After you become the champion they'll trade you the 3rd starter for the one you took.[Charmander for a Squirtle, etc.]

After a short sidequest in the postgame you learn that they were in your position in another world, but their world was ravaged by Ultra Necrozma before they could stop it.
>SwShThey're a fan of yours that you can interact with after each gym battle. They'll give you gifts, including TRs, and can join you in Max Raids. They'd also visit your camp occasionally.
