Ash matures during OS, learns to be a mentor figure in AG, and passes the torch in DP (doesn't even need to be at the end of DP, just have him do that early on/halfway through so Dawn can really take the reins). Once BW rolls out have Dawn pass the torch to the next MC, and the next one, and the next one, etc.
In a way it'd connect everything back to Ash but would make things fresher.
