Probably playing against people that play exactly like him. If you always know what to expect, making predictions and "plays" becomes much easier, but when confronted by seemingly insane or unoptimal opponents, he can do nothing but complain they aren't playing right. "The best swordman fears the man that doesn't know about swordsmanship" and all that.

Random battles and AG are unironically the only truly competitive formats, people with 2000+ elo in those are the actual good players.
