DP or XY.
>OS
Rookie winging it. Has no clear vision of the finish line. Caught up in events far beyond his control.
>AG
More experienced, but still an underdog seeing the outer world.
>DP
Where his experience starts to hit its stride. His philosophy is personally challenged, he's selected by a legendary as its champion, and he makes it further than ever before with stronger mons and better strategies. His conquest was only stopped by a deus ex machina that never reappeared again, nor claimed the regional champion's throne either.
>BW
Baaaaaaad. An attempt to revert him back to his OS personality as part of BW's franchise soft reboot. Some episodes are completely unwatchable because of this, like the time he brought only one Pokemon to the Nimbasa Gym cause he thought it'd be a sweep, and Elesa just let him go back to the Pokemon Center mid-battle to get more Pokemon when his first fainted.
>XY
Removes a lot of his goofy moments in favor of strategy and sakuga battling. Peak shonen hero here. Couldn't be given a mega so got a unique pseudo-mega instead, one that could brutalize actual megas. It all came crashing down towards the end though cause status quo was god. The Kalos League finale was the beginning of the end.
>SM
Removed most of the serious strategy in favor of goofy sillyness because the franchise was jealous of Yokai Watch. Very harsh contrast with XY.
>JN
No strategy here, just fujo shipping as he abuses every gimmick in the series while running from place to place.
