It brings more problems than it answers. Have each episode be standalone, they have a problem and resolve it within the episode without needing to necessarily affect anything at all.
It worked for many American cartoons that fell into syndication. That is a reasonable way to milk a show for all its worth. Use the Academy as a central hub, and have Ash and Co. go out visiting each region. He won't catch new Pokemon, won't advance himself as a character, but he can meet people and just interact with shit. That's what people want.
