>>50566105Sawyer was/is legitimately a prodigy, the kind of character that a "logic fic" author might write. All his talk of "EXP" aside, the kid legit takes everything he learns to heart, writing down all the important information he comes across to go over, meaning he probably never forgets his type match ups and readily refers to his past experiences, something Ash especially never did, and which is rare to see in the series in general. In a lot of ways, Ash and Sawyer are natural foils to one another. Sawyer takes his journey in a hyper logical scientific way while Ash goes about things loose and by the seat of his pants, employing far more anime logic while Sawyer is a lot closer to game logic. While this would usually bring animosity to their relationship, their differences in experience and Sawyer's rather agreeable personality means he was far more willing to try and pick up on what made Ash a great trainer, desiring to learn from it and adapt it to his own style. This explains readily how he was able to advance so quickly, while Ash, who was just doing his regular thing, found himself suddenly being caught up to.
You also gotta remember that OS Ash, who was utterly incompetent in many ways still managed to make it to top 16 in his first tournament. So Sawyer, who's far more competent making top 4 is very believable.
