Advance sorta mellowed out because Poké and Contest both 'won' thanks to Ash's disinterest in romance, the 4kids dub, and Drew having an incredibly obvious crush on May.
Thanks to Poké being old, Advance being sorta neutered and the 'competing' ship being a complete joke. Pearl had some of the smuggest and most retarded shippers back in the day (basically the Amour from back then, but with less normies). Dawn was an incredibly central character, Ash had good chemistry with her and the ship's supposed 'competition' was KENNY. Pearl's main competing ship was Ikari, i.e. a crackship which only got popular because 'I can fix him' autism and keep-away shipping. In short, it was incredibly popular and drew in the worst sort of 'people'.
