It's because they haven't shown off any actual new Pokémon or Megas. That's the driving force of Pokémon hype, always will be. Hopefully the July direct will surprise people.

But generally speaking Gen 5 was a dud with audiences. The teraleak even seems to suggest they expected gen 5 to last longer than it did, and they hurried sequels out and got the Gen 6 ASAP when Black and White were met with a resounding meh from most critics.
Also take into account Gen 5 released months in advance in Japan. There was nothing for most of the world to discover or be excited by. By the time we got B2W2 we were just a few months out from the full 3D reveals of Generation 6.
