well technically, Ash would've had to fight someone in the M8 for that to happen. Ash could've beaten Alain and took 6th, however, that opens up the question of why Ash couldn't have just challenged Leon as soon as he got into the M8, since that is literally his only reason for being in the PWC. I think Ash getting into the M8 right before the tournament was to avoid that.

Its painfully obvious that the anime wanted to avoid champion vs champion fight as much as possible since everybody had a favorite champion they didn't wanted to see lose. Lance vs Diantha was the only true Champion vs Champion battle that wasn't influence due to plot.

Leon had plot armor as the final boss, Iris was too inexperienced , Alain is not even a Champion and Ash is the protagonist of the show.
