As much as people dog on XY nowadays, it's clear from the discourse elsewhere that it was a highly popular series during its run. Hell, Serena got placed high in that recent Japanese poll about favorite female characters, up there with Cardcaptor Sakura, Lina inverse and Sailor Moon. I suspect it was a poll for female fans, but you know how rabid the tumblr and reddit fans can be. Even if you don't care for Serena that much, she is a fan favorite.
And I don't completely blame the XY fans for that either. If you were really into what XY was doing, then the poster of SM Ash looking like a retard after being "handsome" for three seasons is a kick in the balls (or a punt in the cunt, depending on gender) after realizing that Serena wasn't sticking around and Ash wasn't beating Alain. Just imagine if at the end of Horizons, another Ash anime came about, and he looked even more stupid than normal. Maybe that series would be good, but I wouldn't go into it with the best frame of mind to actually enjoy it.
Also, as I'm realizing, people are generally right about the Alola League. So if the League tournament was a big appeal to you as a fan, then it's not gonna match up to your expectations.
