Rewatching XY it's pretty clear that Serena's crush is just a running gag. It's a comedic element, you are supposed to laugh at Serena and her silly love that's built on misunderstandings.

It's to be expected when you have a thread where nobody has a reason to be bitter. Serena's (and amour's) popularity endures in empirical surveys, the XY series continues to be beloved, critics are too often shown to be unhinged and/or shitposters, and Serena art continues to be made. Also, with an upcoming Serena game, nobody has to argue for games.
