>wouldn't have workedThat's what anime development arcs and stuff exist for, just do a psychological analysis of the character and think how she or he would react/be motivated and then throw in some trigger or make the character come a to a resolve or drift towards it slowly.
It's all up to what the writer wants to portray, anything is possible.
The real essentials are staying true to the personality essence and projecting that unique vibe into whatever goal you want the character to achieve while keeping a balance between realistic dialogue/monologue and idealistic ambitions/morality.
TLDR
As long as the character has a consistent psychological portrayal, you can do absolutely whatever you want with them. It's also okay for characters to break their usual beahviour and do unexpected things sometimes since that adds to the realism but only skilled writers can pull this trick off
