His losses to Richie and Harrison weren't to make them look stronger and if I recall correctly, Harrison got knocked out in the next round just like Richie because his Blaziken was still tired from fighting Ash's Charizard. Richie was just a lesson about sportsmanship.

It's up in the air with Tobias. You could say he was there to suggest Ash had more to learn, but honestly, he beat Ash with two out of six monsters and then won that entire League.

All the other series gave something too even if not a league win.
Kanto - Ash still a newfag coasting through his luck. Fair loss.
Johto - Beats Gary. Loses to Harrison but fucks-up Harrison so hard he loses the next round.
Hoenn - Loses the League but clears the Battle Frontier.
Sinnoh - Beats Paul. Loses to Paul but comes out looking like a God-tier Trainer nonetheless.
Unova - Even more insulting than Tobias and XY combined.
Kalos - Nothing.
Alola - Finally wins a joke League but then defeats Kukui, a Top Trainer on his own but mostly importantly defeats Tapu Koko.

Just look at Ash's losses in Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos compared to Johto. In Johto, Ash looked defeated whereas the other losses meant nothing to him.

Of course, they made Charizard lose to blaziken to promote the next gen. Besides that, Charizard had only just begun its training at the charizific valley and the battle was very close, to the point that Harrison couldn't use Blaziken in the next battle. I judge Ash's pokemons strength purely based on their strongest feat. Among Ash's mons, only Pikachu, Sceptile and Charizard have defeated legendaries. Greninja and Infernape defeated the ace of a league semifinalist. We really to see these pokemon in official battles again to have an up-to-date comparison

In order for greninja to be as much of a jobber as charizard imagine if Alan's charizard didn't mega evolve away it's weakness, didn't have thunder punch, could only use fire type moves and fucking quick attack. That's how lopsided the match would have to be to fumble even half as hard as charizard did to harrison.

Now let's compare that to greninja and charizard. Greninja had no super effective moves while charizard had one. Greninja lost with a disadvantage while charizard fumbled a league where the opponent could only damage him fully with a move most baby pokemon use.

Every single on of ash's aces could wipe charizard.

should we include the league losses, there are 40 people above ash, assuming everyone else was better than him (which wouldn't be accurate), with the most notable members being:

>jon dickson
Which leaves us with 76 trainers above ash from the past.
And that's about it really. A few of these trainers would probably lose to ash were he to use his best pokemon, but he's a moron and doesn't do that very often.

If you are lucky XY can still be better than PM, but I doubt it.
