Like Alder's Vaniuxe , Diantha's Gourgeist, Leon's Mr Rime, Iris's Lapras or Steven's Claydol.
I think it gives them personality, as they chose pokemons they personally like or have their own story with them, and not just pokemons that can win battles with just because they are strong.
