Ehh, Aggron was a throwaway Pokémon for both Paul and Conway. Charizard got both it’s X and Y forms divided between Trevor and Alain to both debut the Y form and have Trevor job to establish that anime only rival Alain is far stronger than game rival Trevor. They did a similar thing later by having Sawyer beat Tierno handily, right down to showing off Mega Sceptiles Lightningrod ability helping it defeating Tiernos Raichu. That Ash’s Pikachu has to fight.

Correct. It’s meant to re-establish Tyson is the strongest Hoenn rival, since his pseudo is fully evolved. There’s specific reasons for those last two, but a battle between Paul and Gary seems plausible, as well as what >>46910419 said about a rivalry between them. Remember that Electivire was given to Gary back at the tail end of Battle Forntier. It pulled double duty as a Kanto mon that got a then brand new Gen 4 evolution, show off its an electric type to surpass Pikachu, and give Pikachu and later Chimchar a rivalry with the entire line later in Sinnoh.

Paul and conway both had aggron in DP
Trevor and alain both had charizard in XY
While not the exact same, morrison had metang and tyson had metagross in hoenn
It's not as uncommon as you'd think

Not only was Ash vs. Katie good, but it had a lot of 2 on 2 battles before the end that were pretty memorable. Like Ash vs. Clark, Morrison vs. the Machamp trainer, then Ash vs. Anthony.

Also Glalie shined in the league as did Swellow and Corphish.

That's an really good point to make as well; if anything Ash rarely had meaningful interactions with Drew and Harley (although his Sceptile did get some advice from the former)...while the likes of Morrison and Tyson never really registered for May to interact much with them anyway.

You mean an edgelord who hurt everybody close to him and threaten a region just to fight an invisible villain that he never even met and won every battle through plot armor yet never face any consequence!

The main problem with Hoenn was the lack of rivals for Ash, the series only brought Morrison right at the end of Hoenn saga. However I prefer Morrison way more than Cameron and Alain.

Ash didn’t have that many rival-like relationships with Gym Leaders besides Korrina. There were a few but not many to say one for each region especially since he didn’t really have that case for some regions.

League only characters like Tobias, Morrison, and Cameron are definitely not coming back. But rivals that had significant presence like Paul and Alain could make a return especially since they are still out on their own journeys.

Hoenn bird was awesome. For example, in the league, all Staraptor managed to do was beat Nando's Roserade and then job against his Armaldo. After that against Paul it couldn't do shit against Gastrodon and proceeded to get raped by Drapion. Swellow on the other hand during its league battles performed similarly to Snorlax in Johto. It beat both Katie's Venomoth and Scizor, only losing to Walrein. Against Tyson Swellow beat both Hariyama and Donphan and even made a crack in the armor of Metagross. It also tied vs. Morrison's Gligar which was shown beating Grovyle, a Machamp and a Marowak.
Hawlucha and Talonflame were solid, but not on Swellow's level.

People always fondly remember DP because of Paul. Like him or hate him, he helped give Ash a purpose and served as something to help motivate Ash. But he had nothing driving him in Hoenn besides the League goal. Which is a shame because Hoenn was the last time that the League didn't feel rushed but at the same time it didn't have the same feel as other Leagues since Morrison and Tyson just ultimately felt like COtD that got to appear in more than one episode.

I'll rank the leagues solely on whether they were actually good arcs or not.

Indigo League: 3/10
Two fully shown battles in the prelims plus two partially abridged battles. Then a 3-on-3 in the actual tournament. Rather mediocre overall. Just NPCs and Ritchie.

Johto League: 5/10
We had a preliminary battle, two 3-on-3 battles, and two 6-on-6 battles. The 3-on-3s were the strongest in this league, as Jackson and Macey incorporated type compatibility into their teams, so Ash had to follow suit. (This was also a league where Ash's Kanto starters shined the most.) The Gary battle was pretty iffy as Charizard just carried most of it, and Harrison was partially comic relief so that was meh. Charizard vs Blaziken was good though.

Hoenn League: 8/10
Probably the strongest league in terms of actual consistency. A single 1-on-1 battle, 2 double battles, and 3 full battles. The double battles were rather interesting as both characters despite being NPCs had unorthodox strategies that threw Ash off. Katie is one of the best trainers in the series as she cleverly utilizes switching and type advantages to her favor. Morrison was very iffy in the beginning but his power truly showed, and Ash nearly lost if it weren't for some bullshit from Glalie. Morrison nearly won a 6-on-4 battle effectively; his first two mons were sacked. Tyson was partially abridged and he wasn't as strategic as Katie, but Metagross was a powerful opponent.

Sinnoh League: 6/10
Two 3-on-3 battles and two full battles, not including abridged ones. Both Nando and Conway were extremely unorthodox in their battle tactics and threw Ash off in many cases, requiring Ash to improvise in the match. Ash also specifically used his Johto roster as a callback to HGSS, and Noctowl and Heracross especially shined here. The Paul battle was amazing and is top-tier in the series. Tobias is bullshit but still effective as it shows Ash's penalty for not using his A-team.
