I'll always argue that the first 5 gens of Pokemon were great, but I'd say late Gen 3 to Gen 5 specifically was fantastic.
A variety of spin-offs to compliment the main series, not just in terms of differing gameplay but often with additional Mon you could send to your carts, the main series games were good and it genuinely felt like Game Freak were trying to outdo themselves in some way with every game, Genius Sonority, Creatures and Chunsoft hit their stride with their respective spin-offs, the DP era was the best the anime had been since OS, the DS and Wii being able to support games from the previous gen meant you could upgrade systems but could keep your shit from Gen 3 going.
Truly the pinnacle.
