Desperate headcanon, Ash was still interesting as a character during DP series compare to BW, XY , SM and PM series. There is a reason no other character managed to develop same dynamic with Ash as Dawn did after DP series.

They could have gotten Brock and Misty to be regular of PM series without them traveling with Ash. Misty literally lives nearby Vermillion city so she can visit him anytime she is free from her gym duty. Brock could have pay a monthly visit to Sakuragi Lad for a health cheek on all of Goh's pokemon even though his main goal would have been just flirting with Kikuna.

Why did the anime wasted this?

The weakest part of PM series is the cast. Most people aren't just invested in Goh catching Mew or Koharu finding a goal. Unlike the case of Dawn/May where many people want to see them winning the Grand Festival. Not to mention the interaction between the cast is very poor. Koharu has no dynamic with Ash while the anime tries to shove Ash and Goh's friendship so hard that it looks manufactured.

I think the current writers need to learn from original series and Team Rocket trio. Nether Brock and Misty had any consistent grand goals, I still have no idea what pokemon breeder like Brock were suppose to do as a traveler while Misty's goal of becoming a Water Pokemon Master feels as made-up as Ash's dream of becoming a Pokemon Master. Then there is Team Rocket Trio who has no actual goal and character development yet people still loves them.

Writers need to learn what make Original Trio and Team Rocket Trio so beloved to apply that on the next series.

But yes, I'd watch the hell out of a series with these four. The Articuno PM episode gave me a taste of what a series with them would be like and I enjoyed it.

When you look at it this way it really does look like BW and XY are an AU version of Ash. Those series really messed with Ash’s natural progression. It’s fair to say the SM staff tried to make it more of a continuation of DP, for obvious reasons.
