While PM didn't shill Gen 8 as much as investors and Nintendo would have liked, it also proved the popularity and staying power of its older characters and continuity
PM viewership has eclipsed both XY and SM, with a positive raise in viewership for the first time in ages; it's especially impressive given the rise of streaming as opposed to TV viewership(although PM uploads on amazon prime jp too)
If they reset the continuity after laying it on thick this series, they would face severe backlash from longtime fans
