I'll take JN over other seasons like Johto and XY anyday. Johto filler is a drag whereas JN has whacky and fun filler, and XY has the dullest companions; at least Koharu is entertaining up to the point they decided it was time to ram another Eevee down our throats and while Goh's goal isn't interesting, the episodes revolving around his character's struggles are good and the PM missions are fun. Plus, unlike the XY crew, he has actual chemistry with Ash.

Galar had the material for best cast and PM blow it to shove two boring OC in the show. Marnie, Bede, Alister, Pier, Bea, Gordie, Klara, Avery, Peony etc etc could have made PM as good as OS series.

Obviously it has to do more with some chunni executives trying to make excuse for his poor decision on PM series . Just like DCAU refuse to follow Snyder Cut despite everybody loving it and want to shove Whedon version as Canon no matter how much everybody disliked it and now wants to reboot the whole thing.

The truth is, despite Goh being labeled a protagonist, Ash was always going to overshadow him. Up until now, Ash and Pikachu, and to an extent the TRio too, were the cornerstones of the anime, and had been for 20+ years. As JN progressed and Ash climbed in rank, the focus was bound to shift more in his favor. It didn't have to shift as heavily as it did, with Goh getting the shaft the latter half of JN, but the pacing for the series sucked. The PM finale was a rush job because Ash and Goh's story needed to be wrapped up ASAP. It bugs me how JN had a lot of really solid ideas but dropped the pokeball on every single one. Goh deserved better. Ash deserved better. Hell even fucking Koharu deserved better.

I thought it was an interesting storyline too, and that was with the writers barely tapping into the potential that the PM concept had. With competent writers and a qualified series director at the helm, PM could even be its own series; that's how much storytelling potential it has.

If Goh does appear in the new series, my guess is he'll just be by himself, and PM likely won't even be mentioned, unfortunately.

I was actually the first one to point this out during the beginning of PM but the Masters 8 tournament is total non canon crap filler that doesn't actually resolve the league thing. It's just a glorified side event essentially.
Ash never won an actual Gym route regional league (unlike Alain or Tobias) so even there he sorta failed.
The anime league tournament is the true kino, without it, any pokemon anime loses its relevance.
