although it's frustrating to see Ash get beaten by such an unlikable character(not even in a good way unlikeable), I think the ep served more as a final for the subtle "romance" plot of DP. Dawn in the end still chose Ash over him. kenny made a bet ignoring her feelings and input(and was shitty to her his whole life if anything) and even though he did win he lost something bigger in the end.
nothing will change the fact that Dawn still chose to go with Ash even though he lost, that said more than anything else ever would.
if Ash had won anti-pearlshippers would claim that she only went because he won.
His losing that battle did more for pro-pearl than his winning.
