Maybe the build up was bad, maybe they should have bought reserves, maybe some battles could have been handled better but, as someone who barely watched any JN episodes and only came to see if Ash would win, I thought it was pretty good and got everything I wanted.

Having watched it with a friend yesterday it was one hell of a fucking hype experience to binge the entire tournament. I thought it was quite the spectacle, especially the final fight.

Was it better than Guardian of Alola? Yes and no. I find that the final battle of last gen's anime to have been emotional peak because we had spent so much time developing these emotional connections, so not only was it a hell of an emotional battle, it was a big first for everything. I do however think that the final battle of this tournament is perhaps the largest and most dynamic spectacle we've seen in an official battle. I didn't think it'd be a cake walk, but holy shit I wasn't expecting the sheer anticipation of attrition throughout the battle. In fact, were it not for the last minute rule change for the sake of the crowd's enjoyment and Eternatus I truly don't think Ash would've won the battle. It was absurdly fun though, and I'm glad it happened the way it did.

Genuine question, how can anyone watch the Alola tournament and not get instantly take out of it when Guzma and Golisopod suddenly became cowards against Ash? People shit on JN for nerfing the champions and handing Ash a free win but Alola did it so much worse and more blatantly.

If Leon smacked his head and went "teehee, I forgot to use libero to make Cinderace immune to your electric attacks!" then fine, that's funny in a copout way. But he didn't. And Guzma turned coward last second because he just did.

The way they built up Guzmas character was very specific and if anything, they more or less explicitly said a major flaw of Guzma. He never takes on fights he knows he can't win because he believes it will ruin this reputation he worked so hard to develop by his crew. To everyone else that looks up to him, he's completely idolized, a figure to call upon when the going seems impossible to overcome. With this much to account for, is it so unbelievable to think that Guzma is cowardly to a degree?

If he was fighting Kukui or another important member of society that he fears? Sure, it would add up. If Guzma beat Ash and then chickened out later I'd consider it good writing. A tragic ending to what would have otherwise been the perfect underdog story, similar to what Ash has been through before.
But Guzma had fought Ash before and beaten him soundly. It makes no sense for him to chicken out then.

The problem with gauging satisfaction is you're assuming everyone is the same.

It's more likely there are two kinds of fans.

The Actual Anime watchers- the people who watched almost every single episode. You probably had to suffer through the filler, the potential bad-writing, poor lead-up or maybe even enjoy (allegedly) the better seasons in XY and DP. These are the people who saw everything and they've got mixed opinions.

The Casual Fans- the ones who are more likely to play the game or stopped watching years ago either tuned in just to watch this episode or read the news. They're the ones who just wanted Ash to win. And they got it so now so they are extremely satisfied. Hell, they probably couldn't even give a shit about the rabbit since a few of them are Kanto fans who know shit about abilities. I'm not even sure if they even watched the episode, if my one friend is anything to go by.

I'm in the latter. To be honest I'm not even sure how you fags suffered through 2 decades of the same TR gags and jobbing.

The Masters 8 was great, people are just mad about Alain and Diantha getting cooked by Leon and no reserves. Some will complain about the animation in two episodes and then ignore the majority of episodes that have actual good animation. You’ll see them spamming the same couple webms but conveniently only have webms from those episodes. It’s all disingenuous. People don’t want to admit it was a pretty good arc and ended with the absolute best episode in the entire franchise.

Yeah nah. The tournament as a whole surprisingly only suffered from 2 (TWO) episodes that actually were terribly animated, and those were Lance VS Diantha and Ash VS Cynthia Part 3. Half of Ash VS Leon Part 2 suffered a bit but the second half didn’t bring it down completely.

The fanservice with the cameos were handled great, giving appearances from trainers all throughout the anime’s history. The overall battle writing was a serious accomplishment on Tomioka’s part, because you got to see nearly every game mechanic involved in battles be used in some capacity in this tournament. Stat boosts, debuts, weather, terrain, abilities, side effects, kamikazes, status conditions, type switches, the list goes on and fucking on. It was as if someone who actually played the fucking games was in charge of the plays.

and the sense of scale was unmatched. Regardless of how you feel about how each trainer was treated in the tournament, the staff truly did their best and imo accomplished making this tournament feel as grand as it’s supposed to be.

In fact my only two gripes with the tournament as a whole is that Ash’s friends and family weren’t physically in the stadium cheering and that Leon VS Diantha was cut in half in favor of another “Somebody gets lost” story. As someone said above, the tournament as a whole is amazing binge material and I myself have binged of several times before and after it was completely concluded.

I totally agree with, the M8 was all with its flaws, pretty great, may not have the level of narrative depth the Sinnoh League had, but what other league does?
And I personally would put the M8 as the second best tourney arc so far, simply for Ash vs Cynthia and Ash vs Leon.

nta. I agree they aren't poorly executed for the most part (they have their flaws, like any battle), however, I disagree with corelating that to outrage. We literally know the results of a battle are the most important factor. Ash losing vs Alain brang outrage and made people hate it, while Ash winning vs Leon (and the way they executed it) made people love the battle and forget/ignore any issues/criticisms with the battle.

Nah Lycanroc was a powerhouse too. It defeated Gladion’s Lycanroc who is a contender for being his ace even above Silvally and did significant damage to Kukui’s Incineroar, who was outright the strongest Pokémon barring legendaries in all of Alola before Ash came along.

Eh I just don’t see it. Lycanroc STRUGGLED to do any real damage to Gladion’s Lycanroc majority of the battle, it’s victory hinged on the trump card that was Counter. It caused Kukui to temporarily recall Incineroar but that had no long lasting effects on the rest of the battle because it was sent out just a little bit later, fighting as if the stuff with Lycanroc didn’t even happen. Lycanroc then proceeded to KO to Braviary despite the type advantage, and then later almost draw with Kiawe’s Charizard despite again, the huge type advantage. Out of all of Ash’s “regional aces”, which I don’t even recognize it as one to be fair, it’s undoubtedly the weakest.

Usual stuff about wanting rematches against those dudes who fucked Ash, other stuff about no reserves, smattering of poorly handled returns and gripes about budgets.

Won't comment on the returns since I have no strong feelings about any characters other than Gary but the budget- the animation probably won't ever look as 'good' as the DP/XY era. It seems obvious that they've cut the budget back on SM, and then they've cut the resources even more on JN. Sure Gamefreak could give them more money but it probably wouldn't matter since OLM seems to be at a stage where they'd rather do anything else but Pokemon. XY seems to have got lucky with the pot, and it may not happen again. In fact, after everything, we're lucky Ash v Leon looks as good as it does.

Lucario was different, it was Ash responding to Garchomp’s incoming attack. Any of Lucario’s moves could’ve done the trick, it didn’t necessarily have to be Reversal. Lycanroc on the other hand could not have won without Counter.

I prefer Lana' mom because it would be funnier.
