Many of them had never shipped anyone other than Ash and Misty before. That doesn't mean they made their entire lives revolve around Pokeshipping, and in fact, many of them aren't even Pokemon fans anymore. I personally had many ships over the years that I've since outgrown. Just because it was your first ship doesn't mean it should be what your life revolves around.
