But for what it's worth, Pokemon wouldn't be the first show, animated or otherwise, to bring back the OG love interest to pair off the main character at the finale.
That being said, sticking to a tried and true formula isn't necessarily a bad thing - you just need to do it in a way that lands with the audience. Lots of US sitcoms attempt will they/won't they dynamics between the male/female leads, but how many of those couples do people actually remember? Sam and Diane? Ross and Rachel? Jim and Pam?
