On its own, I don't think it would be enough, but with how fucked the economy is, kids simply are not getting a 500+ dollar present, especially when for that price you could get them a tablet or laptop for minecraft or roblox, which like 80% of kids would ask for first, that has tons more free shit to leave your kid to consume. Americans are too poor to buy this for their kids, and nowhere else actually has enough economic body to make up the deficit, as head in the sand as Nintendo is about the Japanese market.
To be fair, I don't think taking 20 bucks off the top of pokemon itself would actually change this, it is still 500+. The normies just aren't going to buy this, the long-haul pokefags are too split between die-hards, and the ones that hate it on principle. A small venn diagram of people who bought the switch 2, but had no plans for themselves of getting pokemon, might still buy it for their kids as well, but I don't think 20 bucks is a swing for them either. For them, though, I think Pokémon just isn't competing with the games such kids are already being raised by, especially with the reputation pokemon games are gaining in the meme space, which is increasingly the primary culture inlet of 6 year olds.
I think this will actually be the generation that kills pokemon. Not immediately, of course, the current population has another 6-8 years of being a primary consumer base, but this would nonetheless be a potentially fatal blow in the future, assuming nothing major is done to account for it.
