Digimon always tried to be its own thing with its v-pet origins and if anything, took more inspiration from SMT. SMT, "edgy pokemon", only tried to be pokemon with Devil Children, which I doubt most pokefags really know. Same with Dragon Quest Monsters, which it also has a right to do so because like SMT, it did the mechanic first.
Yokai Watch also always tried to be its own thing and not even Level-5 expected it to be as huge as it was during its peak.
Monster Hunter Stories, same thing.
