But part of the reason why the female companions did them is because they needed something that wasn't Gyms (lest they become Misty and aimless in the background for a series) and Gen 3 introduced Contests. On the front, Pokemon pageants were are pretty girly, but they introduced male rivals early on like Drew, Harley, Kenny, and a bunch of one-offs (especially in May's case) and they never felt out of place. It seemed totally realistic that a male could be a Top Coordinator and not be emasculated by it. I do not see that being the case with Tripokalons/Performances in XY. They skewed way too far into the idol aesthetic, and it just seems patronizingly feminine, like a Bratz doll or something. Journeys, maybe.
As for Chloe and May, that's just my impression of the characters. People are able to disagree with me on that, and I have no qualms with it. May's very passionate about the things she likes, but she's not very introspective. Chloe things a lot, probably too much. I'm actually curious if Scott would disagree, just because he's the only other regular Mayfag in here.
