Serena freaked out at Ash being depress with his lose against Wuffric but OG Ash had depression moment like this multiple times in OG series. He wasn't cool awesome ikeman prince charming in OG series but an ordinary boy with a mood swing.
Also OG series was written by Takeshi Shudo and directed by Masamitsu Hidaka. They would have ......... 100% ...... given Serena some weird quirk to make her funny like a character from 90s slapstick gag anime. They have done it with every characters from OG series. They would not have waste time trying to romantic subplot between children, they would have treated the whole thing like some comic relief moment.
My guess is that OG Ash and Serena dynamic would have more like younger Goh & Koharu from the first JN episode on Professor Oak's camp. OG Ash would be cocky, boastful and hot headed and emotionally immature leading Serena to make him behave properly instead of being meek and submissive around him. Maybe she would had a sassy sarcastic personality that she hide under her sweet personality which would have used as a gag like Penny from "Amazing World Of Gumball".
