This is why Shudo wanted Ash to lose the league, retire from Pokémon training and progress into adulthood. Instead of that, Ash's story has become nothing more than a tool for escapism that's left people like you unable to cope with reality.

He had some control over the anime production but not total, he mentions that in that same interview. Takeshi Shudo recalls the event in his blog since he mentions they wanted a talking Pokémon for the sole reason of giving the Pokémon a way to directly communicate with the audience. Early on that interview Ishihara mentions Tajiri made a sort of intelligence chart for the anime team about which Pokémon could probably talk but the anime team settled for Meowth because, according to Shudo, he was deemed charming and evil looking.

With that in mind Tajiri was the director of Yellow and in Yellow Meowth doesn't talk, they took away his ability to talk in the game version meant to mirror the anime so he clearly wasn't on board with the talking Pokémon idea hence why he mentions he would've made the anime stick closer to the games. That section of the interview is talking about why meowtj is the only talking Pokémon.

The franchise still closely follows his philosophy hence why there's an abundance of domestic animal imagery implanted unto the Pokémon. From player interactions in the games, and behaviors as well Pokémon are programmed to act like dogs in some instances, to their specific food in the anime. Satoshi Tajiri was also involved with overseeing the anime, Takeshi Shudo mentions this in his blog and even Shudo own writing on Pokémon in general probably reflect what he was told by the series creators.

Usually not, but Shudo wrote of all kinds of higher ups coming with requests and clauses on characters/concepts. For example, early on Tajiri and Sugimori controlled how various versions of Ash/Red would be portrayed.

It was lenient back then but was it really that otaku pandering in gen 1? Because I certainly can't think of an example like this besides it being more kaiju inspired

Unironically what the fuck happened within TPCi for stuff to suddenly turn like this within the past few years? I don't think the Pokemon branding has been this lenient or otaku pandering since the Gen I / Takeshi Shudo days

Kanto: The SS Anne arc + aftermath
OI: Meowth Rules + Charizard Chills + Misty Meets Her Match. I also loved the black Joy episode, and the Misty and Poliwag episode. And the one about giant underground Bulbasaur. And, well, one of the best league matches.
Johto: Black Arachnid, The Ice Cave, Shudo's filler episodes, the Blackthorne City arc. Mewtwo Returns.
Hoenn: I liked the early eps the most (sans Hoenn Alone) it goes downhill in AG050.
Chronicles: just watch them all. Raikou special can be found subbed.
BF: the Cassidy and Butch episode.
Sinnoh: Lean Mean Rocket Machine, Summer camp arc and Angie's own filler episode.
Unova: the Musharna episode, the fishing competition episode, the thunderstone mine episose, but MOST OF ALL the Litwick episode. Best ghost-themed episode this franchise had, period.

Eh, Season 1 thrived on schadenfreude humor, I wouldn't put too much thought into that. 3rd film was written by Shudo himself, and he didn't try to make Delia resent Ash.

The treatment of Team Rocket throughout BW (and Team Galactic in DP) demonstrated that post-Shudo writers are bereft of any subtlety for bad guys. Shudo could write TR goofy, but cool enough to like them. The next writers defaulted to goofy = loser, serious = competent, and it sucked the fun out of the villains. Team Galactic in the games had goofy grunts searching for honey and different commandera, in the anime they were all interchange people (maybe sans Jupiter flirting with Looker). Then they try to write the TRio acting competent, and also lose all the fun. Imagine how much better their appearances would have been if they let them unwind (the only early eps that did, I think, were the Litwick episode and the fishing competition). We've beeb following the trio for so long - show us how PROUD they are to be treated as top agents, show them being mega serious during mission briefings, then celebrating and giddy with each other afterwards.
It is especially egregious with TR, because the Japs complained, and they started rewinding tgem "one step at a time". And in doing that they've shown themselves to be absolutely incompetent with the knowledge of their own characters. I'll remind you, the first step (not counting the suit color change) was making them blast off again, with or without yana kanji. Did ANYBODY ask for that when they asked to "bring the real Team Rocket" back? Maybe, just maybe, they just wanted back the jokes, and tge varied performances from actors, instead of bored mission talk and threatening tone of voice only?
