A lot of good writers/directors need to be reined in from time to time; there's a reason editors and producers exist. Shudo was a net positive for Pokemon I think, even if the anime may not have been as good for him as he was for it.

On topic there's no reason for them to exist. The Pokémon Company has made it clear that Pokémon take on that role thus they have no reason to be around. Takeshi Shudo in his writings writes that it was decided among the anime staff that they would think of Pokémon and human relationship as the relationship between real critters and humans in the real world.

While they were present early on, the 1996 Pokedex book mentions them, it appears that they disappeared entirely before the games released, it appears there was a change of plans. I place this to when Satoshi Tajiri rewrote the script of the games in six months since he makes it clear that he was heavily drawing on his own childhood. Pokémon was originally envisioned as capsule monsters which was created with the link cable for the Gameboy in mind. As Capsule Monster shaped into Pokémon Tajiri makes a point of him drawing more and more from his childhood as development continues. In short Pokémon represent the little critters Tajiri interacted with in his own childhood, Pokémon at it's core is an idealized version of his childhood which he spent exploring nature and interacting with the creatures that inhabited it. Real critters would take away from that feeling because Pokémon are meant to take on their role. Pokémon at it's core is about the interaction between humanity and the natural world.

Shudo was probably a tad extreme yeah, but he was correct in where he wanted to point at in regards to actual world building implications.
But that feels more related to focus, and having a somewhat sad tone can work.

You can easily have the gym leader and overall "age of adulthood" stuff actually factor in, though i feel like shit like teen pregnancy probably shouldn't be factored in but Shudo is a tad bit of a madman.
A realistic setting can still come off as a nice place if you don't focus on the downsides; of course those were the main things Shudo wanted to play around with. While they can't be fully ignored, you can still have a fun adventure alongside some issues.
I think you can pull it off while not completely derailing.

As I recall, Shudo's attempt at a sensical Pokemon world also had some kinda depressing implications, like how Ash's mom was also a trainer who basically gave up on her dreams after she became pregnant.

I dunno, I think it's better if Pokemon is just "that world where kids can be be on a Saturday afternoon adventure forever with their animal buddies" and not try to build some kind of coherent universe out of it, because you'll always run into some weird situations like that.

This idea has been directly stated by Masuda, so yes; this is literally how they've been handling pokemon since gen 3. All references like Colress or whoever showing up is pure fanservice and not some attempt to make coherent lore.

Shudo's image of the pokemon world is interesting at the very least.
People have always pointed at random shit like its somehow odd if you actually look at the pokemon setting; the entire basis of the series needs kids to literally run off and travel a large portion of land by themselves so they have to be considered "adult" in some sense
(though generally people look at this concept funny because people imply this must mean kids have sex in shudoverse).

I'm not really sure he did that much with the setting though; just threw out the groundwork and never really did much.

I think thats more to do with Flint is that everyone will know the first season, but since Lola is specifically from Chronicles, less people know about her. And also in chronicles it goes to show that he is just the kind of guy who flakes a lot if given any modicum of resistance, which was probably carried over from Shudo's novels where the fathers would flake on the family and cause the mother to have to remarry.

Even Shudo's unfinalized novelization about the shit that goes down in the Ketchum family is more kino and humane than this, despite him being a flippant drunk man who needed help.

Even the prologue tells enough of a story to top the majority of Family Drama past Gen 7 in layer and care.

Dawn was the second one, mostly because she was the first time we really got a "second protagonist" on the franchise. They were very close but their bond was explicitly "best friends" for the longest time. Although there were some hints here and there and High Touch's lyrics definitely have some romance there
Amour was a different dynamic from both. Misty was the tsun, Dawn was the friends to lovers, Serena was the "GOD I WANNA FUCK HIM". Yajima was horny and pushed it real hard on her end. It never really went anywhere afterwards though just like any of Ash's ships

There's a reason those 3 are the only girls shipped somewhat seriously with Ash.

And then you get the flip side. Misty and her siblings. Which while not stated in the anime, but based on Shudo's own writing, a similar thing occured for her family in that both parents left. As not only is it one younger sibling and three older ones instead of the reverse like with Brock, but the relationship dynamic between them is very different. The only one she seems to get along well with is Daisy, while the other two try their best to distance themselves from helping Misty at all.

Yeah nah, I only watched the episodes the filler free guide recommended me. Come to think of it this was another reason why Kanto + Orange Islands OS is still the best, it was the shortest and most condensed of all the seasons with actual variety in-between episodes.

OS Ash is the epitome of a kid with daddy issues who never had a dad who could straight him up since his early days. Let's remember Delia lived in her restaurant and lowkey resented her son bc of being the spitting image of his dad and he also was heavily bullied for being a fatherless kid.
OS Ash was less of an everyday abrasive boy and more of a kid with major issues.
Once Shudo stepped aside, said factor disappeared.
