I think I might rewrite a large swath of this chapter, actually. You bring up a lot of good points with the whole "telling too much" bit. So much for having it done this month. Oh well.
Thank you for your thoughts.
I'll correct the record here, he's not schizophrenic. I'm glad he came off as such in the beginning half because I was aiming for, but I have to stress he isn't because I feel like you're trying to diagnose him off of exceptional circumstances.
The beginning segment is him losing his grip on reality due to sleep deprivation. You can begin experiencing hallucinations within 24 hours of being awake after a good rest, and you completely lose it by the 72 hour mark. Each stop on his trip was around 8 hours apart, so he's been awake for at least 72 hours by the point he's stopped.
As for why he thinks Fort Sumner is unsafe, New Mexico's already got a high baseline crime rate and despite Fort Sumner's small population, its crime rate is also above national averages. It was a bad play at statistics, since Fort Sumner isn't really big to notice it if you're just sticking around for a few weeks. I'll probably remove that bit, to be honest.
