Giovanni is the one who saved Corbeau from the streets/looked after him when he was a kid.
Then later, when Corbeau is in his teens(?), he pitches his business ideas to Lysandre, who he either meets by chance or manages to track down.
During this time, Philippe, who also looks up to Lysandre and is currently running a gang of thugs he met via battling and brawling, sees Corbeau as too cocky and battles him only to lose. After that, Philippe sees Corbeau as his boss, the gang follow and so the Rust Syndicate is born.
Not sure how this aligns with the XY timeline though. I wonder how Corbeau didn’t manage to realise what Lysandre was planning. The again, no one else in the damn region seemed to figure it out, even Sycamore.
