Seeing it from GF and Nintendo's perspective, yes.
Think about it: Z was never going to be made, even if XY lead it up to that. But then the anime and fans wanted the Mega Kalos evolution. Kanto had it, Hoenn (remake) had them, Kalos should have been the first or at least the last.
When GF said no, the guys in anime said "fine, is up to us then"
they probably were never told that Z wasn't happening, and they were really hyped for Kalos anywayNow, A. Greninja did something nobody expected: he stole Pikachu and Lucario's crown. He was cool, he had a close bond with Ash, he was the ace-up-the-sleeve. He was just HIM.
And then... BRASTO happened. Executives and Nintendo said "the show must go own", and forced a bullshit defeat. But by allowing this defeat, they also saw how many stood for Greninja. It was HIS moment, it was HIS triumph, and yet the top dogs said "no".
Ash lets Greninja go under the sunset, but the damage was done. Alola and Galar were dying dogs licking their wounds, and Journeys was a crappy "it never happened" attempt.
Mega Greninja is only a last ditch effort to delete A. Greninja from existence. The biggest evidence GF no longer knows what they are doing. The old men are gone, the soul is gone, even the games are gone. And all they have are just plushies and waifu cum stains. Sounds like the death of a japanese hikikomori if you ask me.
