Removing Serena and Ash would be a very costly move from TPC. Also, Serena returning and being handled differently is a major hint. They didn't meet face to face at the start of the episode and were only covered individually to emphasise their characters. They only met up at the end and shared a semi-romantic moment while promising to meet again. By the way TPC have handled Serena's return, making it short but meaningful and making us wait for it, along with all the obvious hints in XY/XYZ and how much people enjoyed Serena, I think it's quite clear there is a long term plan that has been in actions since Serena's first appearance and was boosted by the fans'. I actually believe that now that the stage is set, we will see much more of Serena in the upcoming series.

They could have easily made Ash go to Alola for holidays and Ash got enticed with the opportunity to try the new trials (as all past regions were Gym Battles) + a potential to be the 1st champion of the brand new league. Sure, he can lose a battle here and there but overall, he can still win the League to become Alola's 1st Champion and eventually represent Alola in the Pokemon World Coronation Series.

I certainly didn't feel any satisfaction at May's cameo with how lame, non substantial and short it was, Brock and Misty felt pretty "meh" in SM too and Serena in JN felt really off in contrast with JN Ash.
I get the feeling OLM is tired of the ashnime and puts in minimal effort at this point. And yes, the M8 tournament was a piece of shit with the Chmapions being nerfed in comparison with the Gen1-6 powerscaling narrative

They could've montaged the E4 Battles before cutting straight to Diantha, the only fight people care about, then have Ash lose in about 2 episodes. Have Diantha say something to the effect that her last battle against Greninja and the subsequent business with Team Flare inspired her to train harder and take her position as Champion more seriously (which is why Greninja doesn't just outright beat her Mega Gardevoir in the rematch). From there, have Ash say now that he's finally won a league, he's going to take a break before he takes a crack at another one. There's your justification for him going to Alola and being more passive in it + the irony of his "vacation" being the place he eventually becomes champ in. That'd need 2 episodes to finish, which if you scrap that weird "The Legend of XYZ" episode means you only need 1 more episode to fit it all in. SM and Journeys play out exactly the same from there.

As for the performance issues, it's playable, and actually interestingly enough has to do with keeping the switch from overheating.
If you forcibly clock the switch to it's full speed, that SV literally only uses for load times, there's no issues at all. The problem is that will wear out your switch fast.
Best guess? There's a Switch Pro coming out relatively soon, was intended to come out before Pokemon, couldn't due to COVID chip shortages, but unlike BotW 2, Pokemon can't delay ever because it has to be in sync with the rest of the brand (which is what kneecapped XYZ and SM1 with a lot of last minute jerry-rigging, including major plot rewrites), so instead they programmed in a throttle and shipped it on deadline, issues be damned.

Charizard's been bleeding popularity for years, and it's because genwunners have had their fill and people are sick of how overpromoted it is, and that's despite it being a genuinely cool Pokémon.
My point was that even Charizard, the second-most popular thing from Gen 1 after Pikachu, is now becoming less relevant than it used to be. Genwunners lost, and it's because GameFreak and TPC realized that pandering to Gen 1 all the time backfired, and that they can still make games that sell a ton of copies without pandering to you fuckers.

Option 2 sounds the most believable because option 1 sounds really expensive for OLM to redesign literally every past companion and major character in the event of cameo/return episodes, and because they've largely been hands-off regarding shipping stuff since XYZ ended beyond general teasing that every series has had. I wouldn't put anything past them, but TPC doesn't seem like the company willing to inflame shipwars again just as they're trying to wrap up their series and start anew. If I were a betting man, I'd go all-in on option 2.

I actually own the Animestyle issue where Yajima talks about the XYZ production, and if I'm not mistranslating, he said that one of the Master Class episodes was the single most expensive episode in all of the XY/XYZ series to produce. Gen 7 isn't just another way to say "USUM", it's the entire generation.

By the time the seond season of XY's show released Greninja had already been put into Smash and designed to be as good in competitive as possible.
