I'm a proud XYfag. This was the absolute height of the core series gameplay to me. The story was mediocre, the characters were shallow, and the Region felt under-developed. But the gameplay was close to perfect. Online is the best in the series, with intuitive interface that runs like butter. Every multiplayer and online feature, baked into the home menu for smooth access and fast interactions. Easily the best thing about the game. And taken together with Super Training, Hordes, and the Friend Safari, one top of a global launch, XY was a fantastic time to be part of the community. As much as everyone cries about them these today, that first year or so with XY was rife with activity. Everybody was there. Even with single player content that pales in comparison to something like HGSS, a-lot of people continued to play these games because of how much better the community and training aspects of the game had become. Breeding, trading, shiny hunting, PvP, all substantially improved over previous games. Arguably even better than SM, since those games reinvented the fucking wheel with the Plaza.
