If they'd just try to hype up the league properly and not have it be "anyone can enter" and just be something like "You need to defeat at least one Kahuna" or some shit, it would've reduced the complaints a lot. It would've helped create a mini arc with the SM gang spreading out in Alola, trying to grab a win against a Kahuna they think they can defeat. It would've shown "These trainers aren't shit, they earned their spot in the league". Would've helped create more character development as well if you add in the possibility of the Kahunas giving the trainers a trial before "earning" the luxury of battling the Kahuna. They could've shown a lot of useless trainers getting cucked in the trials as well. Make shit a challenge for the characters so they overcome it, and grow in the process so they can readily say "We earned a spot in the league".
The battle royal 151 was pure nonsense and a sorry excuse for "weeding out weak trainers".
Plus the finals being 3v3 with yawn-inducing animation didn't help create any excitement. The little hype I had was killed when that TV show gave away a spoiler to the result.
