Back when XY started, BW was really poorly regarded, so despite XY looking promising and getting a lot of people back into the anime, it was generally assumed that even if XY was good NOW, it'd probably go to shit soon like BW had, and DP was still praised as the high point of the anime. As XY continued on and just got better and better, it started getting considered as being potentially on par with DP, but it was extremely rare to find anyone considering it to be BETTER. The prevailing opinion was that it was a return to form.
Yet when SM started and got pretty poorly received right off the bat, its fans just screeched nonstop about "XYfags" as if there was this massive group of people that ONLY liked XY or considered XY to be far above all the other series. It's crazy, it's like the entire SM fandom consisted of newfags that had barely registered that there were Pokemon series that predated XY.
