The reason the league was shit was that basically half of Ash's team in the two battles that were shown were relegated to fodder tier and that Ash on top of that played as if was paid off to lose. Remember that Sawyer had the constant upper hand in terms of strategy and that aside from the Pika Aegislash battle Ash just brute forced his way to victory and made for an underwhelming battle with the animation being the only worthwhile part of it.

I certainly didn't want Ash's first league win to be the one where he was at the peak of his retardation. Reminder that Ash wasted the last turn of Rain Dance on Cut instead of a super-effective stab Water Shuriken, and he also saw the Blast Burn coming and decided not to plunge the WS into the ground as he did previously and instead chose to show off. Ash got the conclusion he deserved in Kalos.
