I think Wallace was just jealous. Realistically none of Wallace's pokemon could stand up to Mega Metagross. Wallace's Milotic seems to be his strongest and I don't see it being able to do anywhere near the feats Metagross did.

Pikachu also didn't need a Z move to take down Milotic, from what little we saw it went down with normal Thunderbolt. So Wallace was full of shit.

Wallace wasn’t stronger than Steven because they hadn’t battled yet and when they eventually did Steven beat him therefore meaning Steven was actually the stronger trainer. It's warranted, this has been the largest trainwreck in the production of this show in a decade. Obviously I and others understand that this pacing is meant to give more time to the staff because they clearly bit off more than they can chew, but I am not obligated to give a fuck. This is a result of OLM not giving the PM team enough resources since they don't profit percentage wise as much from this series as their other projects. This could be easily remedied by having some of their floating staff pitch in, but they don't even bother. Therefore, I have no sympathy and WILL call them out on it

What the literal fuck are you talking about? Pokémon is among the Top 5 most profitable shows on TV Tokyo as of March 2021

OLM is having production issues because COVID shot a giant hole in their otherwise consistent work cycle. Most of their in house animators worked together at their HQ and several of them suffered from COVID, leading to a lot of their more consistent animators from late Sun and Moon going on hiatus or not being able to return to work at all. Comparing the staff lists of early JN before and after the COVID hiatus is actually fucking devastating, they took a huge hit in terms of loss of staff.

More episodes in PM have been outsourced than either SM or XY and majority of the freelancers XY was known for are all gone. You literally have no fucking clue what you are talking about, so stop posting about it.

What you're saying makes no sense. Steven is the strongest and has been the strongest in Hoenn since he took the title in XY. Prior to XY, you cant make that claim. By your logic, I could say since Ash beat Steven, that means Ash has always been stronger than Steven and they just never had a chance to battle. That is obviously stupid, Ash didnt become stronger than Steven until this season, and more specifically until the end of this season. I can claim end of JN Ash > Steven, not that Ash has been stronger than Steven for his whole career, just as I can claim Steven > Wallace after XY, but prior to XY I cant claim that.

Yes you can because Steven existed at that point, he just hadn’t competed in the League yet. The fact that Steven was an established character meant Wallace could never officially declare himself the strongest in good faith until his battle with Steven ended. That’s like Goku calling himself the strongest in the universe when Beerus, Broly, and even Gohan exist.

And their other projects don’t have nearly as many issues; granted those are mostly seasonal shows so the comparison is pretty weak, but they should still bring in their more talented members from other teams in the studio for the M8, no? Go look at Komi or Summertime Render
The issue isn’t really covid anymore; it’s that OLM is choosing not to invest a lot of resources into the series

No you can’t because Ash lost the League while Steven didn’t so at that point no he wasn’t stronger. Eventually he did become stronger. In Steven’s case he hadn’t challenged the League yet because he was still out journeying for stones.

I'm legitimately glad that my experience with the anipoke community was the wild ride that was the XY-era /padt/. The amount and quality of OC and memes, the high quality shitposting, the fact that it was very distinctly unique all made for something that was basically a perfect storm for a great time. I know nobody else thinks so but Journeys only worked when we got lots of episodes about this guy. He's the only character that's actually changed, improved, and had any genuine moments of catharsis beyond

and even casting development/story bs aside, since Pokemon stories without Paul are nothing to write home about, Goh and his Pokemon have brought a lot of comedy into the series. Not 'repeated joke of the week' comedy, but actual funny scenarios and reactions.

Things have felt very dry since we stopped getting Goh episodes.

It’s common knowledge that big franchises that have a lot of stakeholders (in PM’s case, Nintendo, TPC, and TV Tokyo who has the chief distribution and management rights) end up giving the actual studio a much smaller piece of the pie than series like Komi, which is just really negotiations with the manga publisher and the distributor
Of course I don’t have the fucking contract pdf sitting in front of me, but even if we assume each stakeholder takes an equal percentage cut (which they definitely don’t), then they still have less of a CHANCE of making money
Now obviously this doesn’t necessarily mean that they make less on Pokemon than other series as the total should outweigh the lower percentage, but it DOES mean that if OLM DOES put more effort into their seasonal shows, they have a good chance of earning more
Also, it’s pretty clear from JN’s popularity that they don’t even need to put that much effort into the series to make it something viewers would like; lots of people will watch it regardless of whether the production is actually good

While this is definitely true, it’s fairly irrelevant to my point; which is that OF THE STAFF THAT ARE CURRENTLY ON HAND AT THE STUDIO, FREELANCERS OR OTHERWISE, most of their talented staff are simply not working on this series and are working on OLM’s other projects

OLM should take an example from Studio Perriot. Both Naruto and Boruto also faced similar bad production issues. Naruto due to the tsunami all those years ago and Boruto because a lot of SP’s animators dipped out. To combat this they started hiring freelancers off of twitter who’ve been able to give even the most shitty Boruto fillers some good animation. Outsourcing to Chinese and Koreans will only work for so long before the whole staff implodes.

This doesn’t make any sense. Their most talented staff are working on the seasonal shows because they are seasonal shows. Pokémon is weekly. Just because we are getting a tournament arc doesn’t mean all the best animators should be all hands on deck which has literally never been the case in any previous league. The focus, animation wise, is always on the later rounds. Kalos League for instance has a terribly animated first episode, and the next two episodes weren’t anything to write home about either. The best animated battles were always Ash Vs Shota and Ash Vs Shota, and even with that the first half of Ash VS Shota also suffered from bad animation. The difference in the first and second half of the battle is night and day.

People crying about the first rounds not looking great are literal disingenuous idiots. Isn’t it wild how all of a sudden with Ash VS Cynthia actually GOOD animators are on the staff list? That’s because that’s ALWAYS how it’s been.

The storyboards, layouts, and general direction far superscedes JN that it doesn't even need move a shit ton to be an entertaining battle to watch. The problem was sticking to the Flying, Fire, grass, water, electric, wild card combo. Gen 3 didn't having many interesting fire and water choices that fit Ash. One the best things XY (and later SM) did was dropping that format. I wish they done that early. It would have saved us from have so much repetitive clutter and given Ash more type variety.

Not that anon but you’re out of your mind if you think Shota VS Tierno was better than all of JN’s battles. It suffers from the same problems of the M8 battles where Pokémon go down to 1-2 hits and Pokémon standing in place. The first half of it was good because both of them were making strategic plays and then that’s completely thrown out the window after the commercial break. This seems like a bit of revisionism on your part because even back when the episode aired it was largely seen as underwhelming, including in these threads. A lot of people including the nips were mad about Tierno getting nerfed too.

Also Alain VS Trevor definitely had some issues. Lots of off model nonsense, slideshow paneling, nasty effect work, and overall bad composition. The writing was also terrible, with Alain sweeping Trevor all with one hit. You motherfuckers think the Masters 8 is bad? You haven’t rewatched the Kalos League in a long time.

Yeah, Kalos is hard carried by Alain/Ash and Ash/Shota, so everyone forgets everything else. Honestly, the "league" portion of each series is usually the most overrated portion of the series. Orange (which wasn't even a tournament lol) and Sinnoh are the only ones I can actually rewatch these days.

Aggron got STALL'd and Cradily went down with a legit strategy. Mega Aggron took a first-strike Strong Jaw boosted Fishious Rend to boot (which was even talked up IN THE SHOW about how strong it was, which Steven clearly recognized given he switched it out right after), so don't act like it was taken out from a Fresh Z-Move and Iron Tail

Look at the Lance v Diantha battle, Diantha's mons were strong but Lance was portrayed as having a strength and durability advantage in every matchup. Diantha needed to spam SE moves or use trickery to win, even if by the end she won with room to spare.
Mega Gardevoir took almost no damage, things might have been different if Dragonite had Dynamaxed at full health or Gyarados wasn't taken out so easily.

The idea of seasonal aces in general is sort've something that was applied to the series in retrospect. Kanto and Johto were one big soup, AG didn't have Sceptile until the Battle Frontier. DP was the first time the trope really solidified, and it took until XY for people to start talking about there being "seasonal aces".

Well, it is finally over and now i can see why the fandom has such animosity towards the Hoenn League. I thought it was nice to see Ash make his way to the Top 8 with every battle getting showcased but these were extremely disappointing and by the time we got the battle with Tyson you could tell they no longer gave a fuck. Now i can agree this was an incredibly subpar Pokemon League and only better than the ones in Kanto and possibly Unova and that's a big IF because i remember jackshit from those Leagues.

Man I really fucking love the Paul episode. It was the perfect fanservice episode anybody could’ve asked for in my opinion. And I also feel like it worked as great foreshadowing for the Masters Tournament. Ash took out Gyarados with relative ease, Metagross gave him a decent struggle, and the Garchomp part of the battle was definitely intended to show Ash still isn’t ready for Cynthia just yet despite him initially thinking he and Dragonite were equally matched with Paul’s Garchomp. Garchomp who represents Cynthia, still stands as a wall that Ash needs to work to overcome.

I feel like Ash VS Cynthia is going to get a lot of love by the staff.

Treecko was Ash's only starter in Hoenn, caught as early as the 7th episode, and while it didn't win every battle, it was used in a good chunk of the Gyms and evolved mid-way into the series. Also compared to say Taillow or Corphish (and the barely shown Torkoal or Glalie), it's obvious Treecko was given a lot more importance than the others.

The only reason they held back Sceptile till Battle Frontier is the DP games got delayed for a year from 2005 to 2006. Had AG ended with the Hoenn league, Grovyle would have likely evolved before the 8th Gym and gotten time to shine in the league. They had extra time so they saved it.

The Hoenn league sounds hilarious when you think about it because of how absurd it is (Glalie being strong for no reason, Ash having no "major rivals," 3 different 6 on 6's but the last two being rushed, Morrison having a mental breakdown over battling Ash, Torkoal losing every battle except 1, Grovyle not getting much time to shine,), but I have fun watching it.

I actually really liked that part. It justified half of his mons going down easy and gave surprising depth to a character with such a limited screen time, showing his inexperience with competitive settings and just how much he bonded with and cared about Ash, not to mention it really made you aware how mature Ash already was to talk some sense into him and how he genuinely got mad at him wanting to throw the match. The issue here is that you're comparing it to leagues that hadn't been written yet. Ash's "major rivals" in the Kanto league was a guy that lost an offscreen battle before Ash got to face him and a guy we got introduced to the episode before their match, and in Johto we had Gary again after he had been so absent the entire 3 year arc a lot of viewers had probably forgotten him plus a guy Ash met the episode before the league started. Morrison was one of the better Ash rivalries up to that point. It was Drew that was the first "properly handled" rivals in the show, and he was May's rival, not Ash's.

Barely a fucking league then, just two battles, altho the Tierno vs Sawyer ep was nice. The reason the league was shit was that basically half of Ash's team in the two battles that were shown were relegated to fodder tier and that Ash on top of that played as if was paid off to lose. Remember that Sawyer had the constant upper hand in terms of strategy and that aside from the Pika Aegislash battle Ash just brute forced his way to victory and made for an underwhelming battle with the animation being the only worthwhile part of it.

Ash got the conclusion he deserved in Kalos.

This has to be bait, however, in the off chance you've literally never seen anyone's reaction to the fight (would be weird you're trying to damage control even though you are ignorant), the most prominent thing was them crying about MCX getting 1 shot by dragon pulse. There were also alot of people crying about MCX losing to base Zard and not GMax Zard. To top it off, they cited MCX beating 9 rando trainers' mega mons + 1 E4 (where Alain did use berries in between) and it essentially getting 1 shot by Primal Groudon and Mega Rayquaza as reasons why the match should have been close.

Blue Saturday used to be a lot worse but has tamed a lot because they used to get into lots of arguments with Nuzamaki about Iris and SM and I guess Nuzamaki eventually made them concede because they aren’t as bad as they other two anymore. His current VA, Sarah Natochenny, takes over at AG146 (was hired as a cheaper, sound-alike), after Kayzie Rogers was replaced to by TPCi. YMMV, but most still prefer Veronica Taylor's Ash to this day like me.
