Also the real nail in the coffin is that Ash has no dynamic with Serena beyond being nice to her. The least they could have done is have him like her back and be unable to admit it.
As it stands we got panning shots and jealousy episodes from him with Misty You can dismiss the latter but they SHOULD have given Ash the former with Serena so there's at least some indication. Him being more competent but also more oblivious than OS Ash is completely and utterly absurd
