Fun anipoke development fact: When Takeshi Shudo was discussing Team Rocket's design with Sayuri Ichiishi, he wanted them to look slightly less reminiscent of the Doronbo gang from Time Bokan. So he suggested they take after the "handsome" villain team from Sasuga no Sarutobi, another anime he worked on at Ashi Pro, and I think the only one from there that didn't involve Kunihiko Yuyama in some way. A lot of people say that James was inspired by Leonardo Medici Bundle from GoShogun (and to be fair, that did come before Sarutobi), but it seems like Shudo just had a type for male villains.

The writing staff mostly stayed the same between DP and BW. Aya Matsui dropped out of the rotation until late XY, but otherwise the core that had been around since OS were still there. Everyone in a higher staff role like Yuyama, Sudo and Tomioka remained. Maybe some of the animation team changed, but that wouldn't have any bearing on how the Unova League was handled.

Also ICY was surprisingly...harsh in tone for an ashnime movie even with the whole context.

Although I still don't understand why exactly Ash believed that his method of befriending Pokemon was superior to Cross's, this wasn't elaborately explained but whatever. Some BS about "pure hearts" but how exactly is Ash's heart the purest that I fail to see, if anything, Souji's heart should be purer...

"Issho ni itai kara"...Yeah when Pikachu spoke that was something out of this world.

Also how the fuck did Ash resurrect after dying? It wasn't even explained here properly???

I got the impression that Kunihiko Yuyama was trying to use Pokemon as a metaphor for the innate psychological characteristics that a person possesses in this movie, which is a new take, very fresh, compared to the ashnime's Shudo's vision (well as I see it) that Pokemon are new concepts of knowledge that people apply in their lives

Following up on this image; Choji Yoshikawa being there in the writers' meeting gave me a lead on something. Shudo talks a lot about a producer or a "liaison between the staff and toy companies." I thought this was someone from Nintendo or GameFreak, because there are a ton of "producers" for Pokemon. But I thought it might be him given how much time space he gets in Pokemon Story. Nothing confirming, but after going back through some stuff, I have a pretty solid case now.

Picrel is from Dogasu's translation of the column where Shudo talks about Masakazu Kubo's involvement in the Porygon incident. Here he repeats the bit from earlier about the "producer" doing a lot of the things series comp did, but its in the context of the producer being Kubo's representative after the anime started and Kubo couldn't attend writer's meetings (he still attended production meetings though -- different stage). Given the language here about the producer being Kubo's favorite, Yoshikawa's the best pick, since Yoshikawa was also the anime-side producer for "Bakuso Kyodai Let's & Go!," a children's anime about Mini 4WD competitions that was Kubo's first big feather in his cap as a person who produced "hits" for Corocoro/ShoPro. So when going through Shudo's columns, its a fairly safe bet that the three people he refers to by title are:

>That Producer or Gozen-sama's representative: Choji Yoshikawa
>Gozen-sama: Masakazu Kubo. I don't know why Dogasu translates "gozen-sama" as "That Person," but he's better at Japanese than me, so.

Dogasu translated and scanned this old book about the Orange Islands production a while back. One of the things in it is a "here's what production on the anime looks like" series. I found this image of a writer's meeting and I'm trying to decipher who's in it. Most of the people are obvious. Starting from the far left, going clockwise:

The dude next to Tomioka is the most interesting because he looks young as fuck. Tomioka's the youngest of the people I can recognize and he would've been in his early 30s at that point. Maybe he's an animator or an intern. If there's any place with a power level high enough to have a clue, it'd be here.

I vaguely recall a live-action Pokemon movie/series starring Ash being talked about with Netflix around the time of Detective Pikachu and the debut of Journeys. IMO, that movie/series is the only thing Pokeshippers would have a shot at hanging their hats on. Shudo never liked Pokeshipping but was very fatherly toward Misty, and so Yuyama and co. have largely stuck to Shudo's wishes since he left, hence why the shipteasing in OS was toned down to virtual nonexistence in AG, SM, and even in MPM. That said, IDGAF about shipping, but it's just my hunch that a Netflix American production would be a Pokeshipper's best shot.

Had Shudo lived to see XY, he probably would've hit the roof tbqh. I know he wanted nothing romantic with Misty (even though his fellow writers insisted on including mild shipbait which Yuyama allowed), but I also thought he wanted no romance at all, period, in the show.

Truth is, there isn't much that goes beyond the stuff you can find on Bulbapedia. Tons of pages on GameFreak and a long interview with Tajiri at the end, which are interesting, but which have been covered elsewhere. The subchapter on the producers meeting the 4Kids group doesn't tell you anything that you didn't know by being on an anime forum in the mid-2000s. I guess you shouldn't expect them to shit talk their American counterparts in a book from 2000. Two kind of interesting things:

>Pic related is a typical page. The main text is written by Kenji Hatakeyama, who is unrelated to Pokemon as far as the introduction says. He's an independent fan/journalist, I guess. The marginal text is written by Kubo. Most of it is elaboration on who the people involved are (this page has a spotlight on Yuyama, for example), but occasionally he'll express his opinions on business stuff like what makes a hit, how to negotiate with foreigners, etc. Its insightful to see how he things, but unless you're a business major, probably not super interesting.
>The "eternal summer vacation" line that Yuyama says in interviews seems to have come from Satoshi Tajiri. Choji Yoshikawa explains that when he met Tajiri, Yoshikawa expressed his disappointment that Pokemon didn't have "inns" like a typical RPG. There didn't seem to be a place to "stop for the night," or "stay." Tajiri responded that the feeling he wanted was for Pokemon to resemble a summer day during childhood. Yoshikawa says a lightbulb went off in his head and he understood, because as a kid, dusk was when you had to come in from outside and stop playing, so night was a dreadful time. That vibe seems to have stuck with the anime long after the Pokemon games got a day/night cycle in Gen 2 and then Gen 4.

Is there anything to the HZ movie rumor? Ashieboys started fuming the last time it was brought up, and that seems to be what's happening in here.

I reread some parts of Pokemon Story during lunch. Adding on another story from last night (>>55437691):
Shukichi Kanda tells the story of how he and Yuyama pitched the idea to have Ash have two human travel with him. The mandate they got received from Gamefreak/Nintendo was to play the game and figure out what they liked about it for the anime. So Kanda says he came up with the pitch of "when I played the game, I thought it would be cool to ask the Gym Leaders to travel with me like in a normal RPG." Apparently he didn't have to go that far; he asked if they could do it and they said "sure." Apparently even though the game people were strict about what the anime could do, for the most part they had a good relationship, even if a lot of their ideas got nixed.

It's pretty telling how much the game people had a say in things, if Tajiri and Takashi Kawaguchi often sat in on meetings. I'd have to imagine that things got more involved over time than less, just given how corporate the Pokemon enterprise needed to become to sustain its viability. But it's clear enough that the game side and the anime side work closely together, even though I doubt Ken Sugimori or Ishihara go to production meetings anymore. If a relatively minor thing like Ash having traveling companions had to be approved first, then surely the Horizons writing staff needs permission (if not a mandate) to do something like tinker with the lore behind a legendary Pokemon, or try to to craft an original plot for the anime.

Dunno why that specific example came to mind. Who knows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My copy of Pokemon Story finally came in. I've done a quick read-through of the chapters about the beginning of the anime (from Masakazu Kubo's proposal to Nintendo to make an anime, to the preview screening of the first episode). Although Kubo's name is on the book, it seems like the person who wrote the words is Kenji Hatakeyama. It's still largely from Kubo's POV though, and it's a pretty aggrandizing account whenever Kubo shows up in the interview portions. Anyway here are some of the highlights:

>Choji Yoshikawa says that he came up with the Time Bokan idea for the TRio, although Shudo is also credited for writing out their setting. This seems to line up with what Shudo said about the TRio's gimmick being pitched before he got there, but with him saving them from the trash bin.
>The story of the Time Bokan idea being rejected is not brought up, although right before they talk about Yoshikawa's pitch, there is a quote from Kanda about the number of proposals they made being shot down being something he couldn't help but think about.

It's worth noting that none of the production people (aside from maybe Yoshikawa) said anything nice about Kubo. Ordinarily it wouldn't be worth mentioning, but given how often Shudo throws shade at him, I couldn't help but notice.

The weird thing is that I don't even think people cared at all about directors until Yajima came along. Throughout XY you'd hear a lot of Yajima wanking but during BW I doubt most of the type who wanked Yajima could even name BW's director without looking them up. Yuyama wanking was never a thing, for example.

I actually don't know too much about Yuyama, but that's to be expected. His job is not a flashy one, and aside from interviews talking about future plans for the series (that people keep misquoting) there isn't much with a clear set of fingerprints that he leaves on the show, aside from being the one to recommend Shudo, I guess.

Any episode with a returning character I considered "canon." I took a very liberal interpretation because I wanted to make a generous case about how much filler was in certain seasons. The only things that Bulbapedia might consider important that I didn't were "X Pokemon is revealed to know a certain move."

Masakazu Kubo, who was THE OG meddling executive from ShoPro that Takeshi Shudo identified in his blog, was still working on the Pokemon anime at least as late as 2019. He, along with Tsunekazu Ishihara, Masuda and Yuyama, were on the jury for an art contest for Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution according to this post from the early Journeys era: https://arch.b4k.co/vp/thread/37743238/#37748124. IMDb also has him as a producer for Koko, but IMDb is often wrong. In other words, the same executive that was throwing his weight around in production meetings during the OS-DP era that our flamebaiting friend pretends to worship was also there for XY and the "protect Alain protocol."
